Janet Hawes is a nursery keeperAn employee in a zoo who takes care of the animals. in the Children's Zoo. She has worked for the San Diego Zoo for 31 years, and has cared for many baby animals whose mothers could not take care of them. Janet has had some favorite little patients over the years, but she bonded with all of them.
"Every single animalAny living thing that is not a plant. Most animals can move about freely. All use plants or other animals as food. All have sensory organs. is special and I've loved them all," Janet says. "My favorite was Mali the bonobo...she needed physical therapy and lots of TLC (tender loving care). She was loving and smart and lots of fun. She is 4 years old now and lives with her bonobo group at the Zoo."
Other animals Janet has taken care of had their own idea of fun, like a certain little fox.
"We had a playful little fox running around on the nursery floor during exercise time. He jumped up and grabbed my uniform, literally by the seat of my pants! I tried to remove him and the game was on, for a puppy-like tug-of-war. Then, he hung there like a rag doll as many amused Zoo visitors watched us through the Nursery window."
